Atlanta Falcons quarterback Byron Leftwich, seen here after being injured 21 October 2007, will be out for up to four weeks after surgery on his right ankle, the National Football League team said Wednesday.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Byron Leftwich underwent surgery on his right ankle Wednesday morning and is expected to miss three to four weeks.

“He had a procedure done this morning that is a very aggressive procedure,” head coach Bobby Petrino said. “They actually go in and put a couple screws in there and it helps it heal faster. It’s the same procedure Todd Weiner had a couple years ago. A lot of hockey players are doing it now. It’s supposed to increase the healing and hopefully he’ll be back in three to four weeks. He says two, but the doctors say three to four.”

Leftwich injured the ankle in Sunday’s 22-16 loss to New Orleans. The former Marshall star was making his first start for the Falcons and was 15-of-23 for 145 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game.

Petrino said the team will go with Joey Harrington and Chris Redman at quarterback while Leftwich heals.

“He wanted to get back on the field as quick as he can,” the coach said of Leftwich. “This is a new, aggressive procedure that has worked very well.”
